They provide up to $25,000 to U.S. undergraduates to study abroad for 8–52 weeks in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

In 2023, the national nominating panel selected 108 Boren Fellows and 210 Boren Scholars from 202 graduate and 538 undergraduate applications. The institutions cited below were the top recipients of these awards based on initial selections -- i.e. before declined awards and the promotion of alternates.

Description: Boren awards up to $25,000 for an academic year to undergraduate students to help pay for study abroad costs. Students must study a non-traditional language in a non-traditional region—Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Applicants must be: U.S. citizens at the time of the national application deadline. A high school graduate, or have earned a GED. At least 18 years of age or older at the time of the national application deadline. Planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

Boren Scholarships Selection Criteria Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a longer term commitment to government service. Does the applicant describe how they might fulfill the service requirement, and does the applicant demonstrate a longer term commitment to the federal government?

The prestigious awards are distributed by the Institute of International Education, on behalf of the National Security Education Program. Three undergraduate students received Boren scholarships and one graduate student received a Boren fellowship to study abroad next year.
