It's no surprize then that there are loads of problems Vietnamese speakers have with English pronunciation. Vietnamese learners have problems pronouncing a final consonant sound, such as /z/, /s/, /t/, /v/, /ks/, /ʤ/ – for example, mice, right, manage. Instead, they leave them out.

For pedagogical purposes, translation problems may be classified as pragmatic, cultural (i.e. behaviour-related), and linguistic. A fourth category includes those problems that are encountered in one specific text. We will call them specific problems.

Idioms, Expressions, and Slang Everyday expressions can be very language-specific and pose issues for translation. You often can't take them literally and many derive from the language's culture. You can even have expressions with divergent meanings in dialects of the same language.

Also, Vietnamese has a lot of differences from English because many Vietnamese words derive from Chinese and the difference in pronunciation, grammar, etc. Therefore, it takes much time for Vietnamese learners to use English proficiently. Many learners give up when they can not remember and use ESP for their work.

Understanding Basic Vietnamese Phrases Xin chào (sin chow) – Hello. Cám ơn (kam' on) – Thank you. Xin lỗi (sin loi) – Excuse me/I'm sorry. Tôi không hiểu (toy kong hew) – I don't understand. Bao nhiêu tiền? (bah-oh nyew tee-un) – How much does it cost? Tôi muốn (toy mwuhn) – I want.

The research has shown that students often have many grammatical difficulties when translating from Vietnamese into English because of the structural difference between the two languages. They often have difficulty translating sentences with passive voice, relative clauses, and prepositions.

First, tones in Vietnamese carry lexical meaning and are obligatory in the syllable structure. Second, Vietnamese has a more complicated vowel system, while English has a larger consonant inventory with greater distribution across syllable positions.

Vietnamese does not have the equivalent sounds for /l/ and /r/. As a result, they are commonly mistaken for /n/ and /z/ respectively. Vietnamese speakers also find the /ð/ sound difficult to pronounce – as in weather, rather – and so they pronounce it as a /d/ or /z/ sound.
