Background. The South Carolina Department of Education's system for Assisting, Developing, and Evaluating Professional Teaching (ADEPT) grew out of the knowledge that good teaching is fundamental to student academic growth and achievement.

Implemented statewide in 1998, the ADEPT (Assisting, Developing, and Evaluating Professional Teaching) system has become a vital part of South Carolina's overall teacher quality initiative.

The blue circle with the red ring includes the Contract type: Induction (1,2,3,) Annual (1,2,3,4), or Continuing. Below the contract level, the Evaluation TYPE is listed (Formative, Summative, GBE).

ADEPT is South Carolina's system for Assisting, Developing, and Evaluating Professional Teaching. The component of ADEPT assigned to an individual teacher is based upon the teacher's contract level: Induction contract educators fall under the guidelines of Clover's Teacher Induction Program (TIP).

Expanded ADEPT emphasizes the direct connection between teacher practices and increased student learning and the need for an evaluation system that continuously develops educators at all performance levels and produces actionable and constructive feedback to support professional growth.

Expanded ADEPT is the SC Department of Education's system for teacher support and evaluation. Expanded ADEPT is really the umbrella term for the levels of teacher support and evaluation process types that occur for teachers at all contract levels throughout the span of their careers.
