Restrictions on assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices. Definitions and usage. Drawing from federal and state law definitions, the term assault weapon refers primarily to semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns that are able to accept detachable magazines and possess one or more other features. Some jurisdictions define revolving-cylinder shotguns as assault weapons.

"This has been state law in California for decades, and we will continue to fight for our authority to keep our citizens safe from firearms that cause mass casualties. In the meantime, assault weapons remain unlawful for purchase, transfer, or possession in California."

Effective January 1, 2023: Expands the prohibitions on the manufacture of firearms without a state license, including reducing the number of guns any person, regardless of federal licensure, may manufacture without a state license from 50 to three.

Military Assault Weapon Permit allows possession of a personal assault weapon for use in military sanctioned activities only, by active members of the military permanently stationed in California who have express permission from their Military Base Commander.

It is worth noting that other more common handguns, like the Glock 19 or SIG Sauer P320, would also be considered assault weapons under the '94 ban and California's law if they have threaded barrels.

Registration is allowed for a firearm defined as an assault weapon only if it does not have a fixed magazine and does have one of the additional features specified in Penal Code section 30515.

CCWLs may be issued to individuals who work in the state and/or active duty military members permanently stationed in California.
