Explanation of Property Taxes The basis for ad valorem taxation is the fair market value of the property, which is established January 1 of each year. The tax is levied on the assessed value of the property which, by law, is established at 40% of the fair market value.

TAVT is a one-time tax that is paid at the time the vehicle is titled. It replaced sales tax and annual ad valorem tax (annual motor vehicle tax) and is paid every time vehicle ownership is transferred or a new resident registers the vehicle in Georgia for the first time.

The TAVT is calculated by multiplying the fair market value by the rate in effect on the date of purchase. A reduction is made for the trade-in when the sale was made by a dealer, but not when the sale was made by a private individual.

The Georgia state standard deductions for tax year 2023 (taxes filed in 2024) are: Single: $5,400. Married filing jointly: $7,100. Head of household: $5,400.

You can deduct only the Ad Valorem Tax portion of the annual auto registration on your Federal Schedule A. The new Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) does not appear to be deductible for Federal or Georgia purposes. In order to be deductible as a personal property tax, it must be imposed on an annual basis.

Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) Rate Changing to 7 Percent The temporary title ad valorem tax (TAVT) reduction provided by the General Assembly in 2020 will expire on June 30, 2023. Beginning July 1, 2023, the TAVT rate will return to a rate equal to 7 percent of the fair market value of the motor vehicle.

Personal property taxes can be deducted from your federal income tax return up to $10,000 per year. Sometimes called an ad valorem tax, a personal property tax must be based on the value of the property. One-time tax assessments cannot be deducted. It must be an annual levy.

No. You cannot deduct your moving expenses.
