Home / Program Offices / Housing / The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Our Role. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. We provide mortgage insurance on loans made by FHA-approved lenders.

i. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) insures home mortgages made by private lenders against the possibility of borrower default. If the borrower does not repay the mortgage, FHA pays the lender the remaining principal amount owed plus fees and allowed costs.

FHA Case Number: Unique 10-digit number assigned to a loan through Case Number Assignment on the FHA Connection. A loan assigned a number is called a case.

On the Lender Query by Case Number page (Figure ), type the 10-digit FHA case number in the FHA Case Number field, separating the first three digits from the remaining digits with a dash (-). Example: 123-4567890.

Important: FHA requires the current lender to assign the case number to the new lender in FHA Connection immediately upon the Borrower's request but no later than within 5 business days of the request for transfer.

The FHA, part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), provides insurance for a type of reverse mortgage known as a home equity conversion mortgage (HECM). The insurance protects the lender in case the borrower defaults on the loan. HECMs are the most common reverse mortgages today.
