Beginning with tax year 2023, you may qualify for a Child Tax Credit of $1,750 per qualifying child, with no limit on the number of children claimed. This is a refundable credit, meaning you can receive a refund even if you do not owe tax.

Getting married does not automatically change your credit score. You and your spouse will continue to maintain your own separate credit histories and scores. For 2023, the maximum working family credit is: • $350 with zero qualifying older children • $1,275 with one qualifying older child • $2,450 with two qualifying older children • $2,850 with three or more qualifying older children The Minnesota Child Tax Credit is $1,750 for each qualifying child under the age of 18.

The 2023 child tax credit is worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child. However, the credit is not fully refundable, which means that you cannot receive the entire $2,000 back as a tax refund, even if you have a $0 tax liability and qualify for the full credit amount.

When two individuals get married and decide to file jointly, their standard deductions combine, and their Married Filing Jointly standard deduction becomes $25,900 for 2022's taxes. So, the standard deduction for a married couple is not “higher”; it is the combination of the two single individuals' standard deductions.

The Minnesota Working Family Credit is a refundable credit for working individuals whose income is below a certain level. (See Minnesota Statutes, section 290.0671.) It is similar to the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Both credits are refundable, meaning you can receive a refund even if you do not owe tax.

The credit equals the higher income tax paid by a married couple under the married joint income tax brackets, as compared with the tax they would pay if their earned income were taxed separately under the single tax brackets.
