The general rules for repetition of courses are as follows (see exceptions below in Courses Repeatable for Credit): You may not repeat a class in which you earned a grade of C or better. You are allowed up to two repeats to earn credit for a class when the previous grades you earned were substandard (D, F, W, NP).

The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes don't replace your low grades – they average in with them. That's right: your low grade won't be dropped – the retaken class grade will be added to it and averaged.

Typically, only the grade earned from the first taking of a course is counted in the GPA. Grades from subsequent retakings of a course are excluded from the GPA calculation.

Advice for students and advisers First, repeating is more likely to succeed if their original grade is not too low and their other course grades are good. Conversely, students with very low original grades and weak marks in other courses may not find repeating worthwhile.

A, excellent; B, good; C, satisfactory; D, passing but less than satisfactory; F, failing.

Obviously it isn't ideal to have to repeat a college class, but it is not necessarily BAD to have to retake a class in college. If you have to retake a class in college, it could work out better for you because you will likely make a higher grade and master the content instead of barely scrapping by or getting a F.

When a mark of D, F, NP, or W has been previously recorded in a course, a student may enroll to repeat the course. The student is limited to a maximum of three attempts in any one course to earn a passing grade.

Over 90% of colleges allow undergraduates to take a failed class again to improve their grade. Depending on the school, the new grade may replace the F on your transcript — or both grades may appear, with the new grade replacing the F in your GPA calculation.
