There are four widely-used referencing styles or conventions. They are called the MLA (Modern Languages Association) system, the APA (American Psychological Association) system, the Harvard system, and the MHRA (Modern Humanities Research Association) system.

A referencing style is a standardized way of referencing your sources in the text and in the reference list. One example is to use parentheses in the text with information about the author and the year of publication (APA), another is to number the references in the text (IEEE).

In text, first citation: (Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA], 1970) or Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, 1970). In text, subsequent citations: (OSHA, 1970) or OSHA (1970). Note that the date for an OSHA standard should be the effective date; for most standards, this is 1970.

Citation Guidelines Depending on the citation style, a standard citation requires the following: organization that created the standard, the year of creation, the title of the standard, standard number and hyperlink.

Basic format to reference standards Author. Year (in round brackets). Standard title (in italics). Standard number (in round brackets). Publisher name. Homepage URL of the publisher (as a direct URL is not available for standards). The first line of each citation is left adjusted.

APA Citation Style Title (Standard number). Retrieved from URL. First citation: (International Organization for Standardization [ISO], 2016) or International Organization for Standardization (ISO, 2016). Subsequent citations: (ISO, 2016) or ISO (2016).

Each citation in the text must correspond to an item in the reference list. In alphabetical order by surname of first author. ... In order of date, with earliest first, for references by the same author. With hanging indents, meaning the first line of each reference is set flush left and subsequent lines are indented.
