On August 9, 1989, the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA) abolished the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation (FSLIC) and the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB) and created the RTC.

The Banking Act of 1933 is signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This law creates the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), by far the most controversial element of the statute.

Cover Photo: On June 16, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Banking Act of 1933, a part of which established the FDIC.

The FDICIA was passed in 1991 to strengthen the FDIC's role in overseeing banks and protecting consumers. The FDICIA was created in response to the savings and loan crisis.

The Glass–Steagall Act limited commercial bank securities activities and affiliations between commercial banks and securities firms to regulate speculations. It also established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which insured deposits for up to $2,500, ending the risk of runs on banks.

The Banking Act of 1933, which created the FDIC, was signed by President Roosevelt on June 16, 1933.

The purpose of the act was to create a more efficient, productive, and effective base on which to build the industry and safeguard future transactions. It resulted in dramatic changes to the savings and loan industry and its federal regulation, including deposit insurance.

In response, Congress passed legislation that strengthened capital requirements and required banks with less capital to close. The act had a large impact on the Federal Reserve. Notable provisions included the creation of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) under Section 8.
