Frequently Asked Questions About the Temporary IDR Waiver All borrowers with loans held by ED (Direct Loans and federally held FFELP Loans) who have accumulated time in repayment for at least 20 or 25 years will see automatic forgiveness of their loans.

In most cases, interest will accrue during your period of deferment or forbearance. This means your balance will increase and you'll pay more over the life of your loan. If you're pursuing loan forgiveness, any period of deferment or forbearance may not count toward your forgiveness requirements.

You must be a direct employee of a qualifying employer for your employment to qualify. This means that employees of contracted organizations, that are not themselves a qualifying employer, won't qualify for PSLF including government contractors and for-profit organizations.

Millions of borrowers will receive at least three years of additional credit toward forgiveness under an IDR plan or PSLF when their accounts are updated in 2024. If you've been in repayment for at least 20 or 25 years (including forbearance time), you'll be free of student debt after the adjustment.

Note the COVID-19 pandemic payment pause doesn't count toward forbearance totals listed above — but it does count toward your overall forgiveness payment count. Additionally, the optional payment on-ramp that borrowers can use to adjust to making monthly payments again won't count toward forgiveness.

Both deferment and forbearance allow you to temporarily postpone or reduce your federal student loan payments. The difference has to do with interest accrual (accumulation). During a deferment, interest doesn't accrue on some types of Direct Loans. During a forbearance, interest accrues on all types of Direct Loans.

If you have loans that have been in repayment for more than 20 or 25 years, those loans may immediately qualify for forgiveness.

Depending on the type of account and forbearance program, some lenders might report forbearance to the credit bureaus. If this happens, loan forbearance may have an effect on your credit history and credit scores. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends getting a forbearance agreement in writing.
