In 2017, The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) became the national sponsor of Project WILD. Since Project WILD was introduced in 1983, more than 1.5 million educators in the United States have participated in Project WILD and Aquatic WILD workshops.

Project WILD began to be used in Florida in the early 1980s. Dale Crider, a biologist with the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission first brought the program to Florida from western states where it was developed by the Western Regional Environmental Education Council (WREEC).

Since Project WILD was introduced in 1983, more than 1.5 million educators in the United States have participated in Project WILD and Aquatic WILD workshops. Those educators, in turn, have reached over 100 million youth since the program was first introduced.
