GIHS is the strategic management and global synchronization of joint operational health services that are sufficiently modular, interoperable, and networked to enable the Joint Force Commander to quickly and efficiently combine and synchronize capabilities.

Joint Concepts address emerging operational challenges, propose solutions and identify required capabilities through collaboration, engagement and rigor, in order to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Joint Force.

Role 2 has a limited hold capability (i.e., no bed capacity). Role 2 is classified into Role 2 light maneuver (2LM) and Role 2 enhanced (2E). to support land maneuver formations (normally brigade level). A Role 2LM medical unit is able to conduct advanced resuscitation procedures up to damage control surgery.

Role/Echelon 3 support is normally provided at Division level and above. It includes additional capabilities, including specialist diagnostic resources, specialist surgical and medical capabilities, preventive medicine, food inspection, dentistry, and operational stress management teams when not provided at level 2.
