Contributory versus noncontributory plans Under a contributory group plan, you are expected to pay part of the premium for group life insurance. To avoid adverse selection, the insurer typically requires that at least 75 percent of eligible employees participate in the plan.

Employee Participation. Most California medical insurance companies require that at least 60 to 70 percent of the eligible employees actually enroll in the medical insurance plan offered by the employer.

Group health insurance plans are purchased by companies and organizations and then offered to their members or employees. Plans can only be purchased by groups, which means individuals cannot purchase coverage through these plans. Plans usually require at least 70% participation in the plan to be valid.
