If you become disabled, but have over 15.4 years of Service Credit and are eligible for a Normal Service Retirement, you may be paid more from a Service Retirement than a Disability Retirement.
The Benefit 1.66 percent of your FAS for each year of credited service, plus 1.66 percent of your FAS for each year of service you might have earned if you worked to age 60, but not more than one-third of your FAS.
Certain pension payment options provide a lifetime benefit to a beneficiary. Your beneficiary(ies) may also be entitled to a Post-Retirement Death Benefit, and, if you were employed by New York State, a Survivor's Benefit. When you die, your survivors should contact us as soon as possible.
Sign in to Retirement Online. From the top of your Account Homepage, in the 'I want to' section, click the “View Pension Check” link.
You reach the 80 percent earnings limit (or are “restored to earning capacity”) if, in any calendar year, your income from wages and self-employment is at least 80 percent of the current rate of basic pay for the position from which you retired.
Disability benefits are equal to 50 percent of the employee's average weekly wage for the last eight weeks worked, with a maximum benefit of $170 per week (WCL §204). If counting the last week in which the disability began lowers the benefit rate, it is not included in determining average weekly wage.
As a NYSLRS member, you are part of a defined benefit plan, also known as a traditional pension plan. Defined benefit plans provide several advantages over the 401(k)-style plans offered by many private employers.
Calculations. For all tiers, a disability retirement benefit is generally one-third of your final average salary. However, the benefit may be more or less depending on your age and service credit.
