An extenuating circumstances form is for when circumstances happen beyond your control that may prevent you from completing work on time.

If financial hardship is the result of conflict or displacement you can apply for a fee waiver. It is not possible to apply for an application fee waiver under any other circumstances, including if you are applying for a scholarship.

You should receive a response as soon as possible and no more than ten working days after submitting your application (unless you are submitting your evidence late). There may be good reasons why a decision cannot be made within this timeframe – for example if your case needs to be escalated to your Faculty EC Panel.

If you are ill or your studies have been affected by other serious events, you can submit an Extenuating Circumstances form. 'Extenuating Circumstances' are events that are sudden, significantly disruptive and beyond your control.

To make an appeal You must complete the Stage 1 Academic Appeals Form and submit by email with all supporting information and evidence to casework@ucl.ac.uk within 10 working days of your results being published.

Students are welcome to apply for deferred entry if they would like to take a gap year. Making an application on this basis does not affect your chance of being selected. However requests to defer made after an offer has been made will be considered on an individual basis but are not always granted.

Requesting a deferral If you need to request a deferral for one of the above reasons you will need to do so on the offer page of your application portal. If you are requesting a deferral due to illness or parental or adoption leave you will need to provide a letter from a relevant medical practitioner.
