Previous F-1 Visa Holders: If you previously attended school in the U.S. and you still have a valid F-1 visa, you may use that visa together with your USC I-20 to enter the U.S.–even if the SEVIS numbers do not match. But you must still pay the SEVIS fee to activate the new USC I-20.

All students receiving a new initial I-20 must pay the SEVIS fee of $350 online. Please see fee payment instructions below. Generally, students will not have to pay the fee again as long as they maintain their F-1 status.

Once all the required documents have been received and processed, the I-20 can be available within 7 business days. What information does the school need?

The United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) has complete access to your information via SEVIS. Additionally, an USCIS officer will receive a notice via email and/or an alert anytime a significant change is made to your SEVIS records.

The process includes 3 steps: Step 1: Submit your application and pay the application fee. Step 2: Receive your Acceptance Letter from the Tutorium. ( 5 business days) Step 3: Receive your I-20 from UIC OIS. ( 5 business days)

Those student names and biographic information are entered into a U.S. government database called SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). SEVIS processes the information and produces an I-20.

What is SEVIS? SEVIS stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. It maintains current information on nonimmigrant students, exchange visitors, and their dependents (i.e., all those in F or J status). As an F-1 student, you will be assigned a SEVIS number, and a SEVIS record will be created for you.

The F or M nonimmigrant must keep all copies of the Form I-20 received during a program of study. An F or M student does not need a Form DS-2019, “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status.” The Form DS-2019 allows a J exchange visitor to apply for a visa.
