Sponsoring something (or someone) is the act of supporting an event, activity, person, or organization financially or through the provision of products or services. The individual or group that provides the support, similar to a benefactor, is known as the sponsor.

The main difference between a sponsorship and a donation is that sponsorships are based on reciprocity – where cash or in-kind gifts are contributed, usually in exchange for marketing or advertising consideration.

The goal of fundraising is to generate funds to support the organization's mission or goals. Sponsorship, on the other hand, involves partnering with a company or organization that provides financial support in exchange for exposure or promotional benefits.

Donors will usually supply capital capped in the hundreds, whereas sponsors can bring in thousands or tens of thousands. Donations are more likely to be short-term contributions, while sponsorships may be recurring collaborations if run well and are mutually beneficial.

At their most basic level, sponsorships may be direct cash contributions with no restrictions, but in more complex cases sponsorship revenue can be tied to events with specific performance criteria.

I'm writing to ask you to support me and my [cause/project/etc.]. Just a small donation of [amount] can help me [accomplish task/reach a goal/etc.]. Your donation will go toward [describe exactly what the contribution will be used for]. [When possible, add a personal connection to tie the donor to the cause.

The simple answer to this is that a donor gives money or other support without any expectation of getting anything material in return. And a sponsor gives these same things as part of a formal arrangement in which they DO expect something in return. This distinction is a very important one.
