Meaning of redundancy payment in English money that a company pays to workers who have lost their jobs because they are no longer needed: eligible for/entitled to a redundancy payment An employee becomes eligible for a redundancy payment after two years' continuous employment.

REDUNDANCY PAYMENS ACTS, 1967 TO 2007. A claim by an employee against an employer for a lump sum or part of a lump sum. An employee who is in doubt about whether he/she has a valid claim or not can check against an informational leaflet on the qualifications – (see the footnote overleaf).

But not everyone is eligible for redundancy pay if they lose their job, including: employees whose continuous service is less than 12 months. those employed for a certain period of time or for a particular project or season. employees of most small businesses with fewer than 15 staff.

In order to qualify for a statutory redundancy payment, an employee must have 104 weeks continuous employment, be an employed contributor in employment which was insurable for all benefits under the Social Welfare Acts and be over the age of 16.

The statutory redundancy payment is tax-free. If you get a lump sum as compensation for losing your job, part of it may be tax-free.

There may also be signs that your risk of redundancy is higher than your peers. Signs such as unusually close supervision, criticism of your work, a relative decrease in your workload and responsibilities, or reduced client access should be on your radar. Some employers are resorting to 'quiet firing'.

The statutory redundancy payment is two week's gross pay per year of service up to a ceiling of €600 per week plus one week's pay, which is also subject to the ceiling of €600.
