Childhood traumatic stress occurs when violent or dangerous events overwhelm a child's or adolescent's ability to cope. Traumatic events may include: Neglect and psychological, physical, or sexual abuse. Natural disasters, terrorism, and community and school violence.

By raising awareness of the child's symptoms, increasing communication and providing skills to help master trauma reactions, CFTSI aims to reduce symptoms and prevent onset of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In addition, CFTSI offers an opportunity to assess which children and families need longer-term treatment.

Caregiver and Child The CFTSI focuses on two key risk factors of poor social or familial support and poor coping skills in its effort to prevent chronic PTSD.
