The Copyright Act, 1957 had been amended five times prior to 2012, once each in the years 1983, 1984, 1992, 1994 and 1999, to meet with the national and international requirements.

The first copyright law in India was the Copyright Act of 1847, which was mainly based on the U.K. Copyright Act of 1842. The British colonial government, to protect British authors and their works in India, enacted this Act. The term of copyright was for the lifetime of the author plus seven years post-mortem.
