What do we mean by grantmaking? Grantmakers work at foundations and help allocate philanthropic funds to grant recipients – usually nonprofits (but not always). They will often allocate large amounts of money, with varying levels of discretion depending on their seniority and the foundation they're in.

Popular examples: Walmart's Community Grant or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

A grantmaking public charity(sometimes called a "public foundation") gets its money from many different sources, such as foundations, individuals, and government agencies. An example of a grantmaking public charity is the Save the Children Federation. Most community foundations are also grantmaking public charities.

An operating foundation has a clearly defined goal and uses the endowment to achieve that goal directly through its own operations. Grant-making foundations, however, are structured to issue grants to other organizations that align with the goals of the foundation or organization, using funds from the endowment.

Grantmaking strategy: Grant managers often collaborate with foundation leadership to develop grantmaking strategies that align with the foundation's mission, priorities and values. This may involve conducting research, assessing community needs and identifying areas of focus for grantmaking.

The Fund provides a single point for collection of donations from individuals, families, businesses, charitable trusts and other organisations wishing to support refugees and asylum seekers.
