The United Methodist Church uses an episcopal system of governance, which means bishops provide the top leadership. All bishops (active and retired) are members of the Council of Bishops, which is required to meet at least once a year.

These pillars, upheld through the life of our church, are to lead worship, minister to families, start new churches, fight poverty, and develop leaders.

Methodists stand within the Protestant tradition of the worldwide Christian Church. Their core beliefs reflect orthodox Christianity. Methodist teaching is sometimes summed up in four particular ideas known as the four alls. Methodist churches vary in their style of worship during services.

Do United Methodists believe in “praying in tongues”? They do if you mean the tongues of the world and the languages of the countries where United Methodism is represented.

No one is given supreme authority – consultation is vital. At the same time, churches cannot simply arrange their own affairs, but have some shared disciplines and ways of working.

The United Methodist Church does not have a central headquarters or a single executive leader. Duties are divided among bodies that include the General Conference, the Council of Bishops and the Judicial Council. These entities are required by our Constitution to be part of our structure.

How are Free Methodist churches structured? Pastors of FM churches are not members of the local church, but instead are members of the Annual Conference and are appointed to local churches by the will of the area Bishop, while local churches are governed by an elected Board of Administration.
