Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) is the term used by workers' comp insurers to describe the point after which an injured worker isn't likely to get any better. In some cases, the worker is declared to have reached MMI because they've made a full recovery.

You may start getting IIBs the day after you reach MMI. IIBs end after you have gotten three weeks of payments for each percentage point of your impairment rating. If you have questions about whether you are able to get these benefits or how much your payment will be call 1-800-252-7031, option 1.

Impairment Income Benefits end after you've received a total of three weeks of payments for each percentage of your impairment rating, up to 104 weeks. In other words, if you received an impairment rating of 10%, you would receive an additional 30 weeks of IIBs once you've reached your maximum improvement.

After reaching MMI, you will be entitled to additional medical treatment that is related to the injury for a limited time, generally 5 years after the date you were injured. This treatment is geared towards maintaining MMI and helping you to continue working, as opposed to improving your condition.

What Happens After I Reach Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI)? If you have been injured at work, under workers compensation regulations, your employer is obligated to provide free medical care plus weekly wage loss benefits until you can return to your job.

Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) occurs when an injured employee reaches a state where their condition cannot be improved any further or when a treatment plateau in a person's healing process is reached.

After reaching MMI in NY, your temporary disability payments from workers' comp will end. Temporary income benefits can no longer be paid once you reach maximum medical improvement. There is the scary possibility that you could be left without an income.

Once a doctor tells a patient that their condition has reached MMI, it means they have reached the point at which further improvement is not possible. Reaching MMI doesn't indicate that they are completely healed or improved; only that there is no reason to keep trying to improve.
