Time is recorded in KRONOS in six (6) minute, or 1/10th of an hour, increments. A six (6) minute (1/10th of an hour) rule will be applied to early clock-in and/or late clock-outs. 1. Time rounds forward six (6) minutes prior to the scheduled start time, and backward six (6) minutes after the scheduled end time.

Understanding the Kronos Punch Rounding Rule In order to round to 15 minutes, the actual time punches are rounded on the quarter hour. Anything within and including 7 minutes is rounded down to the nearest quarter hour. Anything 8 minutes or more from the quarter hour will round up to the next quarter hour.

When a company tracks work time in 15-minute increments, the cutoff point for rounding down is 7 full minutes. If an employee works at least 7 full minutes, but less than 8 minutes, the company can round the number down to the nearest 15 minutes.

After the 1:00 p.m. cut-off on “Payroll Monday”, hours or corrections of hours must be entered into Kronos Historical Edits to be paid. After Payroll Monday, payment requests received by that Thursday at 11 AM will generally be paid on pay day and distributed with regular checks.

Time Tracking and Rounding: The 7-Minute Rule The rule stipulates that employers may round down to the nearest quarter hour for times of 1-7 minutes and “round up” for times of 8-14 minutes. The idea is to balance the rounding process so that it is equitable to both the company and the employee.

The decision whether to round down or up to the nearest 5-minute increment is based on a 2 ½ minute split of each increment. So, if an employee clocks in at 9:02, the rounding will go down to 9:00. If the clock-in time is 9:03, however, the rounding will be up to 9:05.

NOTE: Kronos follows a 7 minute rounding rule. This means hours worked are calculated based on quarter-hour increments. For example, if your punch time is 14:53, it will be rounded up to 15:00. If your punch time is 14:52 is will round down to 14:45.

Punch rounding allows you to decide whether punches will be automatically rounded up, down, or to the nearest based on the predetermined interval you select. This can be anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes.
