What is the IRS Form 1098-T? The Form 1098-T is a statement that colleges and universities are required to issue to certain students. It provides the total dollar amount paid by the student for what is referred to as qualified tuition and related expenses (or “QTRE”) in a single tax year.

The 1098T form is required for you to claim education credits on your tax return. There are two education credits you may be eligible for based on your qualifying expenses: The American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit.

A form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, is used to help figure education credits (and potentially, the tuition and fees deduction) for qualified tuition and related expenses paid during the tax year. The Lifetime Learning Credit offers up to $2,000 for qualified education expenses paid for all eligible students per return.

The IRS Form 1098-T is an information form filed with the Internal Revenue Service. You, or the person who may claim you as a dependent, may be able to claim an education tax credit on IRS Form 1040 for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid during the calendar year.

Attaching Form 1098-T to Your Tax Return You are not required to attach IRS Form 1098-T to your tax return. The IRS Form 1098-T is not like the IRS Form W-2 obtained from your employer, which is required to be attached to the tax return filed with the IRS.

The 1098-T, Tuition Statement form reports tuition expenses you paid for college tuition that might entitle you to an adjustment to income or a tax credit. Information on the 1098-T is available from the IRS at Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement.
