By Buddy Blouin. Uniformity, professionalism, and maintaining standards are all integrated parts of any branch of military service. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) is no exception.

An Air Force Instruction (AFI) is a documented instruction for members of the United States Air Force intended for use by active duty, guard, and reserve members and associated civilians. It is one of many forms of directives published by the Air Force Departmental Publishing Office (AFDPO).

AFI 36-2101, Classifying Military Personnel (Officer and Enlisted), provides guidance to award and withdraw officer classification codes. Manpower procedures are in AFI 38-201, Determining Manpower Requirements, respectively. Skill in languages other than English may be desired in any AFSC.

Cosmetics and nail polish must be conservative and in good taste. Nails won't contain any ornamentation and must be uniform in color. Shades that contrast with the complexion, detract from the uniform, or are extreme (for example, purple, gold, blue, black, red or fluorescent colors) will not be worn.

Hair will not touch the ears or protrude under the front band of headgear. Cleanly shaven heads, military high-and-tight or flat-top cuts are authorized. Prohibited examples (not all inclusive) are Mohawk, mullet, cornrows, dreadlocks or etched design. Men are not authorized hair extensions.

Authorized headgear will be worn while outdoors unless in an area designated as a “no hat” area by the Installation Commander. Headgear will also be worn indoors by armed Security Forces personnel or others bearing arms while performing duties.

Retirement Recognition Commanders recognize the contributions of all retiring service members by conducting a retirement ceremony unless the individual specifically requests not to have one. AFI 36-3203, Service Retirements, paragraph 7.1.
