If you successfully earn additional credits during a term or academic year and get back on track to completing your degree on time, you must reapply to be eligible to receive an Excelsior Scholarship for the remainder of your undergraduate degree program.

Students must be enrolled full-time (12 credits) and earn thirty (30) credits per year toward their major, including summer and winter terms, in order to receive the Excelsior Scholarship. Students facing hardship are able to take fewer credits.

How do I maintain my eligibility? You will continue to receive the Excelsior Scholarship provided that you enroll full-time and successfully complete thirty (30) credits toward your degree in an academic year. Students who do not successfully complete thirty (30) credits per year can lose the scholarship.

In all instances, if the tuition liability remaining is greater than zero and less than or equal to $2,750 (i.e., one-half of annual $5,500 maximum award), the Excelsior Scholarship will cover the entire remaining tuition expense.

Do I need a certain grade point average to get or to keep the Excelsior Scholarship? Award recipients need to earn a minimum of a 2.0 GPA to maintain their Excelsior Scholarship award provided they earn 30 credits over the course of a year.

The Excelsior Scholarship covers tuition only. You would be responsible for college fees and other costs such as room and board. Credits earned in high school may count toward the combined annual thirty credits if they are accepted toward the student's program of study.

Your award will be prorated when calculating your loan amount. If you received awards for four years and resided in NYS for three years, you will be required to repay one-fourth of the award as a no-interest loan. If you relocated due to an allowable hardship, your loan conversion may be waived.

To qualify, students must submit an Excelsior application by the established deadline, have a combined 2018 adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less, be New York State residents, and agree to live in NYS for as many years as they receive the scholarship.
