There are many reasons why the IRS may change your expected refund amount, including: You may have listed an incorrect Social Security Number for yourself, your spouse, or child; or. The IRS may not agree with the amounts of Economic Impact Payments or Advance Child Tax Credit entered on your tax return.

What Happens Next? Within 60 days of your CP05 notice, the IRS should send a follow-up. The follow-up letter will be either a CP05A or a CP05B. These will include specific instructions on what you need to send to the IRS.

Once you have successfully verified the entries on your tax return, it may take up to nine weeks for you to receive your refund or apply the overpayment to next year's estimated tax. However, if there are other issues, you may receive a notice asking for more information, and this may delay your refund.

This notice is issued to inform the taxpayer that the IRS has made changes to their return which results in an adjusted overpayment that will be refunded within 4 to 6 weeks if no other taxes or past due debts are owed.

IRC § 6621(a) provides that the overpayment and underpayment rates are generally the federal short-term rate, plus three percentage points (or two percentage points for corporations).

A CP05 notifies you that the IRS is reviewing your tax return. The IRS will notify you within 60 days if it needs more information. You'll get a CP05A or CP05B as a follow-up with further instructions.

You get an overpayment credit when your tax payments exceed what you owe. You'll automatically receive a refund of the credit. However, you can ask us to apply the credit as an advance payment towards next year's taxes instead of sending it to you as a refund.

After 60 days, you'd need to file an amended return to reverse any errors and get your refund back. If the IRS thinks you claimed erroneous deductions or credits, the IRS can hold your refund.

The CP05 A notice is mailed to taxpayers to notify them that the IRS is holding their refund until the accuracy of the tax credits, income tax withholding or business expenses has been verified.

We sent you this notice because we have no record that you filed your prior personal tax return or returns.
