Stillbirth is further classified as either early, late, or term. An early stillbirth is a fetal death occurring between 20 and 27 completed weeks of pregnancy. A late stillbirth occurs between 28 and 36 completed pregnancy weeks. A term stillbirth occurs between 37 or more completed pregnancy weeks.

Stillbirth can be diagnosed by ultrasound examination to show that the baby's heart is no longer beating. After delivery, the baby is found to be stillborn if there are no signs of life such as breathing, heartbeat, and movements.

Fetal death refers to the spontaneous intrauterine death of a fetus at any time during pregnancy. Fetal deaths later in pregnancy (at 20 weeks of gestation or more, or 28 weeks or more, for example) are also sometimes referred to as stillbirths.

Stillbirth is a fetal death after a defined gestational age and/or fetal weight, both of which have historically lacked uniformity. Currently, the most recognized definition of stillbirth is a fetal death that occurs at or greater than 20 weeks gestation or at a birth weight greater than or equal to 350 grams.

The term stillbirth. In general, stillbirth is defined as a fetus with no signs of life prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother, and after a pre-defined duration of gestation; after delivery, it is confirmed that the fetus does not show any evidence of life, and cannot be resuscitated.

A certificate of fetal death (fetal death certificate) is only required for a fetus weighing 350 grams or more, or if the weight is unknown, a fetus aged 20 weeks or more as calculated from the start date of the last normal menstrual period. See 25 TAC §181.7(a).

When a Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth is requested, Texas Vital Statistics will issue a certificate with the name, date of delivery, city and county in which the event took place, and parent or parents' names.
