Due to the presence of residual in the horse's system, stallion-like behaviour will continue for about six weeks. Therefore, we advise you to keep the horse separate from your mares for at least six weeks after castration.

The operation This procedure involves making two incisions (one in each side of the scrotum). The testicles are exteriorised and an instrument called an emasculator (Fig 1.) is applied. This simultaneously removes the testicle and crushes the vessels in the cord to control bleeding.

What can I expect after castration? The horse will be completely healed from the surgery within 2-3 weeks, although you will be treating him normally long before that. Training or riding can resume the day after surgery.

Answer by Julie Winkel. The later in life a stallion is gelded, the longer it takes for these stallion traits to subside. For at least three to six months, I would treat the horse as if he were a stallion. Besides steering clear of mares and geldings, be even more careful of confronting another stallion.

Keep an eye on the scrotal incisions – once they have healed (which usually takes 10-14 days), your horse can be turned out in a normal-sized gelding-only field.

Your gelding needs to move for at least fifteen minutes a day (again more is better). If he lunges, lunge him. If you have a round pen, round pen work is appropriate. If he is not broke to work, turn out is alright, but you may need to chase him to encourage him to move.

The "open" technique incises open the scrotum and, having removed the testicles, the wound is left open for postoperative drainage. The “closed” technique involves suturing the various layers, once the testicles are removed, to prevent herniation of intestines through the castration site.

Position/preparation: The upper hindlimb should be pulled forward to expose the testicles. Dorsal can make it easier to identify and remove small testicles. Assistance is required for dorsal recumbency. The scrotum is scrubbed and rinsed with alcohol before and after the local block is performed.
