A confined space, as defined in Section 5157, is a space that has all three of the following characteristics: • Is large enough and configured such that an employee can bodily enter and perform work; and • Has limited openings for entry and exit; and • Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.

OSHA requires roofing contractors to evaluate their workplaces to determine if any spaces are to be classified as permit-required confined spaces. If permit-required confined spaces are present, contractors must mark each entry point with a sign reading “DANGER—PERMIT-REQUIRED CONFINED SPACE. DO NOT ENTER.”

Only specifically designated, properly trained and protected Entry Attendants or Entry Supervisors may attempt to conduct a confined space rescue or retrieval. If at any time, rescue or retrieval of the confined space entrant is necessary, the Entry Attendant or Entry Supervisor MUST CALL 911.

Before an employee enters a permit required confined space, a Confined Space Entry Permit must be issued. The permit documents that all steps listed in the Hazard Analysis have been done to make the space safe for entry, or that the proper personal protection equipment is being used to protect the employee.

Understand potential entry hazards and be aware of signs and symptoms of exposure, • Wear PPE as specified on the permit or on the confined space hazard assessment, • Maintain communications with attendant, • Evacuate space immediately upon notification by Entry Attendant, • Alert the attendant and exit the space ...

Employees must notify the person who authorizes entry before working in confined spaces. The person who authorizes entry refers to any records on file and identifies the actual or potential hazards of the area in question. If no file exists for the specific space, a new one is developed.
