Trends. At the end of the METAR you will find information about the expected development. BECMG is followed by a permanent change in the same coding as earlier in the METAR. For example: BECMG 6000 means that the view will be 3¾ mi. TEMPO is followed by a temporary change, less than an hour.

Visibility 9999 means the visibility is greater than 10 km. / / means this part of the METAR is not available (ie cloud and visibility not available from an automated weather station)

9999 indicates that the visibility is 10 km or more. Current weather conditions are identified with the letter codes shown below. Light snow and mist are coded in the given example. Reporting up to 10,000 ft, use 100 ft intervals, and If it is greater than 10,000 ft, use 1000 ft intervals.

Aviation Routine Weather Report Background: Temperature and dew point are reported in degrees Celsius. Visibility is reported in statute miles. Runway Visual Range (RVR) is reported in feet. Wind Speed is reported in knots. Altimeter settings are reported in inches of mercury.

Decoding a METAR PHNL = the airfield, Honolulu's Daniel K. ... 250953Z = the date and time of the report. ... 05007G17KT = the wind conditions. ... 10SM = visibility. ... FEW024 / FEW040 = cloud cover. ... 27/19 = the temperature and dewpoint. ... A3001 = the atmospheric pressure, a.k.a. altimeter setting.

For this example though we have 9999, this means that the visibility is better than 10km (10000m). We could also have CAVOK in place of the 9999, this means we have visibility of 10 km or more, ceilings greater than 5000 ft and no significant weather. Below we have an example of the visibility of 4000m (4km).

Whenever the prevailing visibility is forecasted to be 9,000 meters or less (6 miles or less), the weather or obstructions to vision causing the reduced visibility will be included using the same notation as the METAR. 9999 indicates 7 miles visibility or greater is forecasted (unlimited visibility)
