The Rules of Transporting Restricted Firearms in Canada As with Non-Restricted, your Restricted firearms must be transported unloaded. These firearms must be stored in a locked, secure, opaque storage container and must be individually secured with a locking device, such as a trigger lock.

Firearms owners need an Authorization to Transport (ATT) issued by a Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) in order to transport a restricted or prohibited firearm to or from anywhere in Canada. An ATT can be authorized by a CFO as a condition on a firearms licence or as a paper ATT, depending on the transportation purpose.

Handguns are considered restricted firearms in Canada. A restricted firearm may be brought into Canada, but an Authorization to Transport permit must be obtained in advance. Non-restricted firearms include most ordinary hunting rifles and shotguns.
