Hepatic Pathology. This is a case of viral hepatitis C, which in half of cases leads to chronic liver disease. The extent of chronic hepatitis can be graded by the degree of activity (necrosis and inflammation) and staged by the degree of fibrosis.

The pathophysiology depends on the etiology of the ALF. Most cases of ALF (except acute fatty liver of pregnancy and Reye syndrome) will have massive hepatocyte necrosis and/or apoptosis leading to liver failure. Hepatocyte necrosis occurs due to ATP depletion causing cellular swelling and cell membrane disruption.

Pathophysiology. The chronic liver disease represents a continuous and progressive process of hepatic fibrosis (Cirrhosis), liver tissue architectural distortion, and regeneration nodule formation. Fibrosis is usually irreversible, but it can be reversible in the initial stage of development.

Some liver problems can be treated with lifestyle changes. These might include losing weight or not drinking alcohol. These changes often are part of a medical program that includes watching liver function. Other liver problems may be treated with medicines or surgery.

Viral hepatitis infections that become chronic can cause chronic hepatitis, including hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Alcohol-induced hepatitis. Heavy alcohol use can cause acute or chronic hepatitis. If it goes on long enough, it can cause cirrhosis and liver failure.

Acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, steatohepatitis, and chronic cholestatic injury are all examples of patterns of injury in liver disease. When the pattern is sufficiently distinctive, it can be recognized almost instantly by an experienced pathologist.
