Is a sports physical the same as a regular physical?

A sports physical is different than the annual physical because it focuses on reviewing your child's current health status and medical history to ensure that your child is healthy enough to play his or her sport.

Sports physicals are usually good for 1 year, though you probably will have to complete a sports form each season. If there are any changes in your health history, like a new injury or you notice new symptoms (such as chest pain or shortness of breath), you may need to see the doctor before being allowed to play.

How long does a physical take? Overall, sports physicals take between 20 and 30 minutes.

The PPE physical evaluation form guides primary care providers in conducting a system-based examination to include cardiovascular, nervous system, general medical conditions, respiratory system, gastrointestinal and urogenital, dermatological, musculoskeletal and mental health.

Originally, the primary objectives of the PPE were to (1) detect life-threatening or disabling conditions, (2) identify those conditions that predispose the athlete to injury or disability, and (3) address legal and insurance requirements.

The examination should include blood pressure, pulse, respiration, body weight and height, visual acuity, at a minimum and could include anthropometric measures. The most common abnormalities identified include blood pressure issues and visual acuity.

ICD-10 code Z02. 5 for Encounter for examination for participation in sport is a medical classification as listed by WHO under the range - Factors influencing health status and contact with health services .

A sports physical form is good for one calendar year.
