How to fill out the IRS 8814 online

The IRS Form 8814 allows parents to report their child's interest and dividends on their own tax return. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to filling out the form online, ensuring you have the necessary information to complete it accurately.

Follow the steps to fill out the form successfully.

  1. Click the ‘Get Form’ button to obtain the IRS Form 8814 and open it in your preferred editor.
  2. Provide your social security number and the names shown on your tax return in the designated fields.
  3. Enter your child's name and social security number in the specified sections.
  4. In Part I, report your child's taxable interest in line 1a and tax-exempt interest in line 1b, if applicable.
  5. Continue to lines 2a and 2b to enter your child's ordinary dividends and qualified dividends respectively.
  6. Fill out line 3 for any capital gain distributions your child received.
  7. Add the amounts from lines 1a, 2a, and 3. If the total is $2,300 or less, proceed to line 13.
  8. If both lines 2b and 3 are zero, skip to line 11 and enter -0- in line 11. If not, continue to lines 7 and 8.
  9. For lines 7 and 8, divide the corresponding amounts for dividends and capital gains by the total from line 4 and enter as decimals.
  10. Multiply the results from lines 6 by lines 7 and 8, and record the amounts in lines 9 and 10.
  11. Sum the amounts from lines 9 and 10 and subtract this total from line 6. Include this amount on Schedule 1 of your tax form.
  12. In Part II, complete lines 13 to 15 to calculate the tax on the first $2,300 of your child's interest and dividends.
  13. Finally, review all entries for accuracy before saving, downloading, printing, or sharing the completed form.
