Without exception, a maximum of 960 hours can be worked within a fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). Nonpaid or volunteer hours can't be used in order to exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year. You will not accrue service credit or any additional retirement rights or benefits.

Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, there is no limit on how much you can earn and still receive your benefits.

960-hour limit Retirees may continue to receive their retirement benefit if they meet the break-in-service requirements above and their extra help employment with all SCERA-covered employers does not exceed a total (for all employers in that public retirement system) of 960 hours per Government Code section 7522.56.

In second tier, you're eligible to retire at age 55 with 10 years of service credit. Exception: If you earned five years of second tier service credit prior to 1985, then you only need five years of service credit.

The board set an initial two-year limit, plus extensions, on retired annuitant appointments. The appointments allow retirees to earn paychecks for up to 960 hours of work per year from employers who participate in CalPERS.

If you are a service retiree, you can work for a private industry employer not associated with any CalPERS employer without restrictions and continue to receive your CalPERS retirement allowance. If you are a disability retiree, there are restrictions on the work you can do for a private industry employer.
