If you just bought a vehicle that does not have a title, or if you just moved to GA but do not have the correct title for your out-of-state car, you must undergo this VIN inspection procedure in order to register the car and be able to legally drive it in GA.

You should expect to pay a fee to the inspection station, as well as an inspection fee and title fee to the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Once your salvage title vehicle has been given a 'rebuilt' title, it is legally considered safe to drive.

Checking a VIN allows you to get the car's complete history. You don't want to purchase a car that is a lemon or stolen, and not only can a VIN check confirm ownership of the car, but it can also provide details about service and repairs, accidents and recalls.

As mentioned above, it is not legal to drive a salvage vehicle on Georgia roadways. Because you will not be able to get a tag or license plate, you cannot get insurance coverage for a salvage vehicle.

Every vehicle in Georgia must go through a safety inspection each year. In some parts of the state, this safety inspection includes any missions inspection, which is often referred to as a smog inspection.

A salvage titled vehicle must go through the Rebuilt Inspection process before a rebuilt title can be issued on vehicles that require titles. To obtain a rebuilt title: Be a Licensed Rebuilder – Anyone who purchases a salvage or wrecked vehicle for the purpose of restoring or rebuilding must be licensed as a rebuilder.

You can get a free VIN check at the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), VehicleHistory.com or iSeeCars.com/VIN. Just pop in your car's digits and these sites will do the VIN lookup and give you information on the vehicle. But you should use more than one of these sites to get the full picture.

When registering a vehicle with the state of GA a Form T-22B may be required. This form certifies that a law enforcement officer has inspected the vehicles identification number. This inspection ensures that the vehicle has not been reported stolen and that the affixed vehicle number matches the title/bill of sale.
