Mississippi's 2023 withholding formula was released by the state revenue department and is the first to use a flat tax rate. Legislation passed in 2022 (H.B. 531) introduced a flat 5% tax rate on annual income over $10,000 starting in 2023.

If you earn an income or live in Mississippi, you must pay Mississippi income taxes. As a traditional W-2 employee, your Mississippi taxes will usually be withheld and deposited from each paycheck automatically.

You must file a Mississippi Non-Resident / Part-Year Return Form ​80-205.

Individuals must file a MS tax return if they have had any state taxes withheld from their wages. Nonresidents and partial-year residents must file Mississippi state taxes if they have income that was taxed by the state.

You must file a Mississippi Resident return and report total gross income, regardless of the source. You are a single resident and have gross income in excess of $8,300 plus $1,500 for each dependent.

Individuals must file a MS tax return if they have had any state taxes withheld from their wages. Nonresidents and partial-year residents must file Mississippi state taxes if they have income that was taxed by the state.

Mississippi Income Taxes Starting in 2023, there is no tax on the first $10,000 of taxable income. The tax rate on taxable income above $10,000 will also be reduced to 4.7% in 2024, 4.4% in 2025, and 4% in 2026 and thereafter. Social Security benefits are not taxed by the state.
