All dog license tags are $10. License tags are issued free of charge for service dogs that assist residents who are visually impaired, deaf, or need mobility assistance. Mailed check payments continue to be free. PetData charges a $2 service for credit or debit card payments.

The tax for each dog or cat shall not be more than $10 for each year or $50 for a lifetime license issued pursuant to subsection B of § 3.2-6530. If the dog or cat has been spayed, the tax shall not exceed the tax provided for a male dog or cat.

Failure to purchase a dog license is a Class IV Misdemeanor which can carry up to a $250 fine. Veterinarians are also required by Virginia State code section 3.2-6529 to provide the Treasurer's Office in each locality with a copy of all canine rabies vaccination certificates.

All dogs and cats four months old and older are required by state and local laws to wear a rabies tag and an animal license tag on their collar.

Licensing Details You must present a current rabies certificate from a veterinarian in order to apply for a license. You may not register more than four domesticated animals (dogs and/or cats) per residential unit without first receiving permission from the Department of Codes Compliance at 757-926-8861.

In order to purchase a kennel license, an owner must meet the following requirements: Complete the Kennel Application Form (PDF) Present proof of a current rabies certificate that is valid through the date of purchase for every dog in the kennel.

What Happens When the Court Declares a Dog Dangerous? After an investigation from animal control, the final decision on whether or not the dog is dangerous falls to your local court. If the court finds that your dog is dangerous, you have 30 days to register with the Virginia dangerous dog registry.

Code of Virginia 3.2-65 (Article 5) requires all dogs older than four months of age to have a current rabies vaccination, and purchase a dog license from the locality in which they live. The General Assembly made this decision to help prevent the spread of rabies in Virginia.
