How to fill out the IRS 8863 online

The IRS Form 8863 is essential for claiming education credits, specifically the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning credits. This guide provides a clear step-by-step process for users to complete the form online with confidence.

Follow the steps to successfully complete Form 8863 online.

  1. Click ‘Get Form’ button to obtain the form and open it in the editor.
  2. Begin with Part I of the form. Gather all necessary information for the students for whom you are claiming the credits. Complete a separate Part III for each student before completing Parts I and II.
  3. Enter the total amounts from all Parts III, line 30, after completing Part III for each student. This total is crucial for calculating your refundable American Opportunity Credit.
  4. In line 2, input your filing status thresholds: $180,000 for married filing jointly or $90,000 for single, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse.
  5. On line 3, enter the amount from Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 11. If applicable, follow specific instructions related to Forms 2555 or 4563, or Puerto Rico income.
  6. Complete line 4 by subtracting line 3 from line 2. If the result is zero or lower, you cannot claim any education credit.
  7. Enter $20,000 for married filing jointly or $10,000 for others in line 5. This is used for further calculations.
  8. In line 6, assess whether line 4 is equal to or greater than line 5. Enter 1.000 if that is the case, or calculate the decimal result if it is less.
  9. Multiply the result from line 1 by the result from line 6 in line 7 and follow the instructions as outlined for subsequent lines.
  10. Proceed to Part II for nonrefundable education credits starting from line 9. Follow similar protocols as outlined in Part I for calculating and entering amounts.
  11. Complete Part III for each student, ensuring to enter their educational institution information and required conditions met for the credits. Be thorough in this section as it determines your eligibility.
  12. Once all sections of the form are completed, save your changes, and consider downloading, printing, or sharing the form as needed.

Now that you have the steps, fill out your Form 8863 online and claim your education credits.
