Petition the Value Adjustment Board (VAB) Many counties have electronic applications. Most counties have posted appeal forms on their VAB websites, or you can contact your county's clerk of court. Submit all forms to the local VAB clerk. Do not send petition forms to the Florida Department of Revenue.

You can call us at 561.355. 3230 or visit us at any of our Service Centers to begin the process. If the matter cannot be resolved, you can file a petition with the VAB. Florida law sets the deadlines for filing a petition on or before the 25th day following the mailing of the TRIM notice from our office.

'Save our Homes' is an amendment to the Florida constitution that took effect in 1995. It limits the annual increase in the assessed value of homesteaded properties to 3% or the change in the National Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is less.

When the property changes ownership, Florida law requires the property appraiser to remove exemptions and reassess the property so the assessed value equals the just value. This takes effect on January 1 after you purchase the property.

The appraiser multiplies the city or town's millage rate by the property value to determine the amount of tax. So, if the appraiser values your home at $300,000 and the property tax rate is two percent, you will owe $6,000.

A taxpayer may file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board if he or she feels the Property Appraiser's assessment, classification or exemption status for their property is not correct. The VAB is an independent entity and is not affiliated with the Property Appraiser or the Tax Collector.
