The Michigan First District Court of Appeals is the state appellate court domiciled in Detroit, Michigan. The First District office handles cases arising from the counties of Branch, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, Lenawee, Monroe, St. Joseph and Wayne.

There are 105 district courts in Michigan and distributed among those 105 courts there are 276 district court judges.

Overview. District I of the Michigan Court of Appeals is located in Cadillac Place, a State office complex in Detroit. The court has 25 judges who are elected from four electoral districts for 6-year terms on a non-partisan ballot. Vacancies are filled by the governor.

At a trial in a U.S. District Court, witnesses give testimony and a judge or jury decides who is guilty or not guilty — or who is liable or not liable. The appellate courts do not retry cases or hear new evidence. They do not hear witnesses testify. There is no jury.

The judges of the Court of Appeals sit state-wide, although they are elected or appointed from one of four districts. The districts and their office locations are as follows: District I is based in Detroit, District II is based in Troy, District III is based in Grand Rapids, and District IV is based in Lansing.
