Paramedic education and qualifications The main route to becoming a paramedic is to study a BSc Paramedic Science/Practice full-time degree at university. All universities set their own entry requirements in terms of subjects and grades, so check these for the course you're applying to.

After being appointed to the Fire Department, paramedics must complete a nine-week training program at the Philadelphia Fire Academy. Once paramedics have completed training, they are sworn in and assigned to a medic unit. Each new paramedic must complete a six-month probationary period.

In addition to the college course requirements and prerequisites, the student must also meet the following prerequisites for the Paramedic program: Maintain current certification as an EMT in Pennsylvania or National Registry certification. Maintain current CPR for Healthcare Provider certification. Be age 18 or older.

EMT - Emergency Medical Technician The State of Delaware requires all EMTs, complete and EMT training program, complete an application, pass a background check, have CPR certification. For more information on becoming an EMT in Delaware go here and here.

In Delaware, paramedics are certified by the state Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline. Individuals must be affiliated with an authorized advanced life support agency and must possess certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians at the paramedic level.

Paramedic (PM) students complete a program between 1,200 to 1,800 hours and may last six to twelve months. Topics covered in paramedic courses include anatomy and physiology, cardiology, medications, and medical procedures.

Entry requirements To practise as a paramedic, you'll first need to successfully complete an approved degree in paramedic science or with an apprenticeship degree. You'll then need to apply to an ambulance service as a qualified paramedic and register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
