It's important to note that Virginia law requires all boats with a motor to be titled and registered. If the boat is exempt from registration, such as a non-motorized watercraft or a boat used solely for racing, the buyer and seller will still need to complete a bill of sale to document the transfer of ownership.

If the boat has no current title, a completed Bill of Sale signed by both parties must be obtained. Complete the Application to Register and Title a Boat. Make a check or money payable to the “Treasurer of Virginia” for the applicable boat titling and registration fees.

Information on the boat, the title, the registration, and the name and last known address of the last owner will be provided if this information is available within the Department's automated database. A fee of $5.00 non-refundable is charged for each boat to be researched.

Contact customer service at 1-866-721-6911 or by email. Available Monday–Friday, during business hours, except holidays.

Duplicate registration cards, decals and titles are available online through your Go Outdoors Virginia customer account. If you are unable to access your account, call us at 866-721-6911 during normal business hours, email us at boat-reg@dwr.virginia.gov, or see our forms section to print and mail.

Once in receipt of the application and required fees, the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries will issue a title, which is proof of ownership, and a Virginia Certificate of Number. A set of registration decals will also be issued.

A Virginia Motorboat Temporary Registration Authorization Number (TAN) is available to boat owners as a means to legally operate a motorboat for 30 days while awaiting the processing of their permanent Registration and Title by the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR).
