What does Compensation recovery unit (CRU) mean? The CRU as part of the Department for Work and Pensions recovers social security benefits paid as a result of an accident, injury or disease, if a relevant compensation payment has been made.

Under the Recovery of Certain Benefits and Assistance (RBA) Scheme the Department of Social Protection can recover the value of certain illness-related social welfare payments from compensation awards made following non-fatal personal injuries claims.

It works with solicitors, insurance companies and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The CRU's job is to make sure the taxpayer is reimbursed for any state benefits you've received if you win your claim. You won't have any direct contact with them. Your solicitor will take care of everything.

Obligation to pay recoverable benefits and assistance A compensator must pay any recoverable benefits and assistance due to the Minister before making a compensation payment to the injured person. The amount is recovered from the compensator as they are the liable entity.

A CRU Certificate is a document issued by the Department of Work and Pensions Compensation Recovery Unit and shows the amount of recoverable benefit if any, which applies to your accident claim.

'statement of recoverable benefits' means a statement issued by the Minister under section 343P. (b) any specified benefits that may be paid to the injured person as a result of the personal injury on or after the date referred to in paragraph (a) until the end of the specified period.

The amount repayable to the CRU is taken from your compensation and paid straight to the CRU by the party you have successfully sued or their insurers.
