You can apply for early access to your super because of severe financial hardship through your super fund. They may want evidence from us to confirm if you meet the income support requirements for financial hardship.

The minimum amount that can be withdrawn is $1,000 and the maximum is $10,000. If your super balance is less than $1,000 you can withdraw up to your remaining balance after tax.

You can withdraw your super if you're. 65 years or over, whether you keep working or not. 60 or over and change employers or temporarily stop working. Under 60 and have permanently stopped working, and you've met your preservation age.

Each year you can withdraw as much as you like through your account-based super income stream (unless you're receiving a transition to retirement income stream).

If you're an Australian citizen leaving permanently, the same rules apply to your super, as if you were living in Australia. This means your super must stay in your super fund(s) until you are eligible to access it. Find out when you can withdraw your super.

While you can use your early release of super to help pay off debts, it's important to understand the conditions you can use it for under the severe hardship provision. Your payment can only be used to settle reasonable living expenses, and can only be used to settle payments that are in arrears.
