IFTA – or the International Fuel Tax Agreement – is a way to simplify how truckers and trucking companies pay their fuel taxes.

If you own/operate a qualified vehicle in more than two of the jurisdictions, you are required to have an IFTA license. A vehicle qualifies if it has the following: 2 axles and a GVW exceeding 26,000 pounds. 2 axles and a registered weight exceeding 26,000 pounds.

Connecticut requires first-time IFTA licensees to register with DRS (the Department of Revenue Services). You are also required to file a form CT-IFTA-2, which is the IFTA license application for Connecticut carriers.

If you were wondering whether or not you're exempt, know that you must register and file for IFTA if you have: Any vehicle with two axles and a gross vehicle weight of over 11,797 kilograms or 26,000 pounds. A vehicle of any weight but with three or more axles. A vehicle that exceeds 11,797 kilograms or 26,000 pounds.

If you have any questions about the application, you may contact the DRS, Registration Unit between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., weekdays, at 860-297-4870.

Is IFTA required? Yes, federal law requires that commercial truck companies abide by IFTA regulations.

So, who needs an IFTA sticker? The state of Georgia is a member of the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA). This means that truckers are required to obtain an IFTA Georgia license if Georgia is their base jurisdiction and they will travel interstate with a qualified motor vehicle.

Operating a qualified motor vehicle without a copy of the original IFTA license may subject a licensee to citations and fines, and the licensee may be required to purchase a fuel trip permit each time the vehicle enters a member jurisdiction.
