Maryland Emissions Check FAQs Most vehicles registered in Maryland are required to have emissions checks every two years. Owners of new vehicles registered for the first time will usually be contacted by the VEIP with a notice for their first inspection after around 36 months.

In Maryland, registered historic vehicles less than 40 years old are presently exempt from periodic emissions inspections.

To request an extension on the myMVA eServices​, you must have the vehicle title number and the current vehicle tag number. ​. REQUEST a VEIP WAIVER - A waiver eliminates the VEIP test requirements for the remainder of your vehicle's current test cycle (a test cycle typically lasts two years).
